Although the zenith of the high-performance muscle car era was nearing its end, the intermediate-sized Chevrolet Chevelle remained popular. Chevrolet used the Chevelle to promote its styling and value, and the model changes introduced through the early part of the decade retained a well-balanced level of optioning performance, and quality.

The aggressive styling of 1970 continued for 1971 with a few updates including dual round headlights, restyling parking lights with two horizontal sections, and a redesigned twin-level grille divided by a horizontal bar with a Chevrolet 'bow tie' insignia at the middle. The grille was flanked by single headlamps in square bezels. The parking lamps were moved from the previous location in the bumper into the front fenders. There were two parking lamp lenses housed in individual rectangular enclosures that wrapped around the body corners.

The base engine was a six-cylinder, 250 cubic-inch engine rated at 145 horsepower. An overhead valve V8 displacing 307 CID was rated at 200 horsepower. Other V8 options included a four-barrel 350 CID with 255 horsepower, 350 CID two-barrel with 165 hp (10 more hp with dual exhaust), a 402 CID four-barrel with 240 hp, and a 454 four-barrel with 270 hp (more depending on the configuration). The SS454 LS5 version included an aluminum intake manifold, four-barrel carburetor, chrome valve covers, dual exhaust, and the cowl induction hood package that channeled fresh air into the powerplant through a specially designed air cleaner seat. Performance options were extensive, including a four-speed manual transmission, 12-volt rear end, 3.31 gears, F41 heavy-duty suspension, and front disc brakes.

Standard equipment included Astro-Ventilation, cigarette lighter, sideguard door beam structure, and concealed wipers.

Malibu models featured a glove box light and left outside rearview mirror. Nomad, Concours, and Greenbriers had Dual-Action tailgate, concealed storage compartment, cushioned-center steering wheel, Flush & Dry rocker panels, vinyl interior, bias-belted G78-14 tires. They also had carpeting, a vinyl-coated textured metal cargo floor, and Guard-Beam side door construction.
